Mackley is looking forward to participating in Flood Expo, the world’s leading flood exhibition and conference, which is taking place this week.
The two-day event, staged on 12-13 October at London Excel, will see a range of high-profile speakers present solutions to widespread flooding problems. It also features an extensive seminar and workshop schedule designed to help highlight new, cost-effective ways to prevent and manage floods. The exhibition features more than 200 companies, including Mackley.
The conference includes a presentation by Doug Wilson from the Environment Agency, titled ‘Learning from winter 2015/16 and next steps’. The National Flood Resilience Review looked at the flooding caused by extreme rainfall in December 2015, and this presentation will cover the work done, the lessons learnt and the action being taken ahead of next winter and in the longer term.
Other keynote speakers include: Jerry Cotter – United States Army Corps of Engineers, Andy Chew – Cisco UK & Ireland and Professor Dragan Savic – University of Exeter.
Protecting coastal communities from the fear of flooding has been an integral part of Mackley’s work since the 1920s. The company’s expertise includes sea defences, managed realignment, marine structures, harbours and coastal maintenance.
Two of Mackley’s most high-profile and highly-acclaimed recent projects – the Broomhill Sands Coastal Defence Scheme and the Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme – provide protection against flooding.
The £30m Broomhill scheme was delivered by Mackley working as part of Team Van Oord and on behalf of the Environment Agency. The scheme, which took two years to complete, provides improved protection from flooding for around 1,400 homes and 100 businesses along a 2.5km stretch of the East Sussex coastline.
Completed in 2013, the Medmerry scheme’s innovative design was based around the latest thinking on natural flood management techniques. The scheme includes the largest managed realignment of open coast in the UK which has created a new wetland for local wildlife with 183 hectares of intertidal coastal habitat for wading birds and potentially endangered species. Medmerry has received no fewer than 20 global industry awards since completion.
David Knapp, Mackley’s Business Development Manager, said: “We are looking forward to Flood Expo. The event will provide an excellent opportunity for us to network and share experiences and expertise with colleagues in the flood defence and coastal protection sector.
“The speaker line-up is also very impressive and we are looking forward, in particular to hearing from the Environment Agency’s Doug Wilson.”
