Mackley participates in STEM careers fair

Growth in Stem Graphic
We are very excited to announce that Mackley is a proud participant in this year’s Growth In STEM careers fair.

After Covid halted the usual events that students would attend in person, The STEM Hub needed to come up with a new way to connect with the students to continue the STEM Learning activities, and they have done just that!

Growth in STEM is an online exhibition featuring a variety of virtual stands of companies offering career guidance in science, technology, engineering and maths. The expectation is that it will reach approximately 60,000 primary and secondary students, so Mackley jumped at the chance to be involved!

The Growth in STEM link, available to schools nationwide, allows students to hover over various images to navigate around the event and learn more about what’s involved – through pictures, videos and interactive tools. One of the features on our stand showcases our current North Portsea Coastal Defence Scheme project with Coastal Partners and the Environment Agency.

The STEM Hub event went live on 11th March and will continue for the duration of the month which coincides with British Science Week and National Careers Week.

You can take a tour of our stand here.

We are very passionate about encouraging the next generation of the construction and civil engineering industry and one of the points we really want to get across is that a career in construction isn’t just about being on site with hard hats and big excavators (although we do love that too!).

We want to highlight the huge breadth of roles that are out there, that aren’t always showcased enough. We want to appeal to a wider diverse group of girls and boys and encourage them to pursue a career in something they may not have even known existed.

We have three young Mackley STEM Ambassadors who have been actively involved in the development of our virtual stand and on Thursday 10th March, two of them (pic below) took part in a live stream event to 10 classes. They gave a presentation to explain the exciting opportunities a career at Mackley can provide, and then participated in a Q&A session.

You can watch the presentation and hear their answers to the excellent questions put to them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm2Ovd7kG9w

We have also created a Coastal Management Workbook and presentation package that supports the Geography GCSE syllabus. Based on a real life scenario, students are encouraged to evaluate the different sea defence options.
