Site visit strengthens links with RICS

RICS visit to Shoreham 5

Members of RICS South East have been shown around the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme in the latest of a series of visits to sites where Mackley is working on behalf of the Environment Agency.

Taking place on 21 October, the visit was hosted by Terry Gretton, Project Manager, and the visit comprised a site tour followed by a presentation of the scheme, where work is expected to continue until 2018. Andy Bosman, E3 Project Manager, gave a detailed account of the piling works that were being carried out at the time at E3.

RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) is the professional body that accredits professionals in the land, property and construction sectors worldwide. RICS’s role is to regulate and promote the profession, maintain the highest educational and professional standards, protect clients and consumers via a strict code of ethics and provide impartial advice and guidance.

RICS visit to Shoreham 3

RICS in the South East of England works to raise the profile of the profession regionally by forging links with business, media and the public. The visit was organised through Deborah Nutt from Arcardis, who are the consultants on the scheme.

The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme is being delivered by Mackley working as part of Team Van Oord and on behalf of the Environment Agency, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, Adur District Council and West Sussex County Council.

The scheme has a high profile within the local community as areas of Shoreham were flooded in 2013. The design addresses the current flood risk, and future risk as sea levels rise.

Under the scheme improvements will be carried out along 7.2km of defences along the River Adur between Shoreham Old Fort and the A27, to significantly improve protection from tidal flooding to properties and businesses on both banks of the river.

The visit by RICS was one of a number hosted by Mackley in recent weeks. On 24 October, students from the University of Brighton visited the Clay’s Lake scheme to gain a valuable glimpse of ‘what collaborative engineering work looks like’.

And on 12 October Sir James Bevan, CEO was among a delegation of Environment Agency senior managers who visited the Shoreham site to witness a training exercise designed to ensure that the Environment Agency and its partners are ready to respond to future flooding.

David Knapp, Mackley’s Business Development Manager, said: “We are always delighted to welcome visitors to the sites where we are working on behalf of the Environment Agency.

“Our employees are passionate about the work they undertake to protect communities from the fear of flooding, and only too pleased to share their expertise and experience with fellow professionals.

“We hope the RICS members found the visit to Shoreham interesting and beneficial.”
