New HQ on the way for Sussex Yacht Club

The first phase of work to build a new headquarters for Sussex Yacht Club is on course for completion later this month.

Based in Shoreham by Sea and founded in 1892, Sussex Yacht Club is one of the oldest in the UK.

Working for the project’s main contractor, W.Stirland, Mackley has been tasked with overseeing the groundworks and delivering a concrete frame package for the club’s new headquarters.

Works have included overseeing the CFA piling contractor, delivering reinforced concrete ground beams, pile caps, slabs and columns, infilling a redundant slipway and provision of new surface and foul water drainage.

One particularly challenging element was the completion of the first floor suspended slab, which involved placing more than 130m3 of ready-mix concrete in approximately four hours.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed during September, with Mackley returning to site in 2020 to complete the external works and utility connections.

Mackley has a long-standing relationship with the town of Shoreham, having recently completed a £45 million project to significantly reducing flood risk to more than 2,300 properties in Shoreham and East Lancing.

The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme, officially opened in March 2019, was described by Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, as a ‘genuine success in partnership working’.
