The Mackley team carrying out a coastal defence scheme on Portsea Island are ‘wearing it pink’ in support of efforts to ensure a brighter future for women affected by breast cancer.
Organised by Breast Cancer Now as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wear it Pink day (23 Oct) is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, with thousands of people taking part in communities, schools and workplaces across the country.
Since the first wear it pink event in 2002, more than £35m has been raised for research being undertaken to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage in order to save lives.
David Knapp, Mackley’s Business Development Manager, said: “It’s not often you see construction workers looking ‘pretty in pink’ – but our employees look great as they support such a worthwhile cause.”
The £58m North Portsea Island Coastal Defence Scheme, which is being delivered by the Coastal Partners on behalf of Portsmouth City Council, is being completed in five phases.
Mackley was selected from a shortlist of four experienced contractors to carry out the fourth phase of the scheme – which has been split into two sections, near Kendall’s Wharf and at Eastern Road.
The works comprise the installation of a 2km sea defence wall, the construction of an embankment and raising the access road.
Once complete, the scheme will reduce the risk of coastal flooding for more than 4,500 homes and businesses on Portsea Island.
