Project will improve water supply resilience on the Isle of Wight

Mackley has been commissioned to carry out a series of works to enhance the Knighton Water Treatment Works on the Isle of Wight.

The £460,000 project, being carried out on behalf of CMDP JV for Southern Water, involves installing various new elements to the facility, while at the same time upgrading others.

The works, which are ongoing, involve the construction of a new aeration tank, a new flow meter and pipework, new sludge pumps and ‘supernatant’ pumps, a new sludge holding tank and reinstatement works at the end of the project.

Among the elements of the project already complete is the new aeration tank, which involved the construction of a new tank base, retaining wall and hardstandings, as well as the excavation and installation of new inlet and discharge pipework.

Despite some technical challenges, the new flow meter and pipework is also complete. This element of the project saw Mackley construct a concrete base to support and ease the installation of new pipework.

When the concrete was cured and the formwork removed, Southern Water issued a Safe Control of Operations (SCO) permit, allowing the site team to excavate the existing pipework and install the new pipework and flow meter.

The installation of new sludge and supernatant pumping station areas is also complete.

The site for the new pumping stations required all the frames and covers to be lifted to a new level, along with the installation of new drainage and sludge pipework.

The supernatant base required more concrete to raise the level, along with a more precise profile to receive the cut and bent steel reinforcement.

The construction of a new sludge holding tank remains to be completed.

This element of the project includes: construction of a new sludge holding tank base and a hardstanding around the perimeter of the new tank; excavation and construction of a new access road, interceptor chamber and washout chamber; installation of a service water extension and a 150-metre sludge line from the sludge pumping station to the new tank.

Once all works are completed, the tarmac access road will be restored to its original condition, and around 1,600m2 of grassed areas will be reinstated.

This is the latest in a series of projects carried out by Mackley on the Isle of Wight during 2017.

In March, Mackley completed a £450,000 project to construct a new electricity substation at Cowes on behalf of Omexom UK.

In May, working on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council, Mackley completed an eight-week project to create new moorings on the River Medina.
