2018 has been another busy, productive and exciting year for everyone involved with Mackley – here’s a quick-fire round up of some of the key highlights and achievements.
January
The year began with a visit by Emma Howard-Boyd, Chair of the Environment Agency, to the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme as works there passed the midway milestone.
Elsewhere, Mackley reported good progress with a scheme designed to maintain the structural integrity of the harbour arm in the historic town of Hastings on the Sussex coast.
February
Work got underway on phase one of a major beach recycling project which will provide improved protection against flooding to approximately 5,500 homes located in and around the town of Sheerness.
Mackley also completed the Coldharbour Flood Wall Remediation and Foreshore Protection Works on the River Thames.
March
Mackley was commissioned to carry out major refurbishment works on the UK’s longest wooden pier – Yarmouth Pier on the Isle of Wight.
Mackley was delighted to support the ‘World’s Biggest Beach Clean’ on Shoreham Beach.
Internally, Mackley launched a major recruitment drive – and unveiled the latest addition to its plant and vehicle fleet, as part of a programme of continual investment.
April
Over the Easter weekend, Mackley assisted the Environment Agency with clearing a 600mm dia storm drain, protecting homes and businesses in the Calmore area of Southampton from flooding.
Mackley also completed a community project at a primary school in Kent to help pupils develop and learn outside of the classroom environment.
May
Mackley was approved by the SafeContractor scheme – a requirement for contractors wanting to carry out work at Gatwick Airport.
A Mackley team arrived in Winchester to carry out CCTV surveys on a network of culverts, to reduce the risk of flooding across the city.
June
Working on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Mackley completed a project to join up two sections of the Thames Path in Greenwich.
Mackley also completed a project to fill a 28-metre gap in the flood defences in the West Sussex town of Littlehampton – in turn reducing the flood risk for 2,000 homes.
July
In July, Mackley passed the midway point on a project to reduce the risk of flooding to a number of properties in the Royal Borough of Greenwich – while works at the Clay’s Lake site entered the final phase.
In the community, Mackley was proud to sponsor Paddle Round the Pier 2018 – Europe’s biggest charity beach festival – which took place in Brighton on 7-8 July.
Mackley also participated in an interactive event to celebrate young people’s achievements in science and engineering.
August
Mackley was credited for playing a key role in the development of a marine boom which can soak up hydrocarbons and reduce the risk of pollution in fast flowing rivers.
The use of a Giken press piling train ensured good progress over the summer months on the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme.
September
55 competitors from 14 teams took part in the Mackley annual golf day on 21 September, raising money for two local good causes.
With only a few months until the scheduled completion of the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme, Mackley published a progress update.
October
Mackley was delighted to support World Mental Health Day 2018 – which focused on young people and mental health in a changing world.
In the community, a primary school in Shoreham expressed its gratitude to Mackley for supporting its fundraising efforts – including the donation of a replacement laptop for the school hall.
Mackley also officially received confirmation that it had been approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to deliver the ICE Training Scheme.
November
Work got underway on a new £4.5m flood alleviation scheme in the Surrey town of Godalming – with the local MP Jeremy Hunt paying a visit to site on 9 November.
Mackley also begun work on an important coastal defence project in Kent, which when complete will provide improved protection from the sea for many years to come.
Elsewhere, students from the University of Brighton paid a final visit to the Clay’s Lake Flood Alleviation Scheme in West Sussex.
December
The year ended with the announcement that Mackley had met the bronze level requirements of FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme).
