Terry will be using his extensive professional network and exceptional skills in guiding projects through the complex stages of design development and client and stakeholder management. His first role will be as Project Director for our Future Water MJJV Ltd project Havant Thicket Reservoir, our joint venture with Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.

Terry has been the Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Managers (CIWEM) for the past 8 years where he led the strategy, growth and direction of the professional body with thousands of members in 89 countries. Prior to that, Mackley know Terry from his long career with Babtie and then Jacobs where he ultimately led their 130-person rivers and coastal team. In particular, Mackley worked with Terry when he was Project Director/Design Manager for the Medmerry realignment scheme, which also involved construction of a large earth and clay embankment in similar conditions to Havant Thicket.

More award success as Hythe Ranges Sea Defences Scheme is awarded Highly Commended in the Climate Resilience Project of the Year category at the 2021 British Construction Industry (BCI) Awards.

The prestigious event, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane was a very different evening to the virtual award ceremony in 2020. It was great to see so many faces from the industry celebrating and networking together again.

The Hythe Ranges Sea Defences project was a Design & Build contract carried out by Van Oord, supported by their subsidiary partner Mackley on behalf of the Environment Agency. It was in a category along with seven other very strong contenders, so we’re delighted that the project received such an accolade.

The judges said that “the project team had climate action in mind from the start” and that it stood out for “its clear combination of both climate resilience and carbon mitigation thinking that is threaded through its core purpose”.  They made special reference to the processes and low carbon materials used that not only reduced the emissions impact but saved money and equipped the EA with the information and evidence to confidently promote them for other schemes.

This latest recognition for Hythe Ranges follows previous multiple award winning projects in recent years at the BCI Awards such as Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls, Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme, Broomhill Sands Coastal Defence Scheme and Medmerry Managed Realignment.

We’re so pleased for the Team that has worked so hard to make this project such a success and one that we are all very proud of.

2017 has proved to be another busy, productive and exciting year for everyone involved with Mackley – here’s a quick-fire, month-by-month round up of some of the key highlights and achievements.

January
We successfully completed beach management works at Hill Head on the Hampshire coast – phase one of a coastal protection project being carried out on behalf of Fareham Borough Council. The scheme, which was divided into three sections and delivered over five weeks, re-nourished the beach to historic levels, thereby protecting the sea defences.

We also launched a new Facebook page, as part of plans to continue to develop and expand our online presence in 2017.

February
We achieved international acclaim when the Mackley piling team – working as part of Van Oord on a project in the Middle East – received a safety award. Van Oord presents a monthly safety award to one of the teams working on the Al Zour Oil Refinery project in Kuwait, and on this occasion the award went to the Mackley piling team.

Elsewhere, the Environment Agency used ‘World Wetlands Day’ on 2 February 2017 to look back at the time when Starry Smoothhound Sharks visited RSPB Medmerry.

March
On 12 March, the £31m Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls project was the subject of a feature by ITV Meridian which reported that work on the scheme was well underway, with piling works complete at two of the project’s 10 reaches.

In other news, we were nearing completion of a project to construct a new electricity substation at Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Mackley was also a bronze sponsor of Flood and Coast 2017 (28-30 March), an industry leading event that advanced the debate about flood and coastal erosion risk, resilience and response.

April
The Broomhill Sands Coastal Defence Scheme featured in a magazine produced by the Environment Agency and its partners to ‘innovate, share and standardise’ the delivery of projects for communities.

Elsewhere, Mackley employees working on two Team Van Oord sites in West Sussex (Clay’s Lake and Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls) received specialist training on silt management, one of the leading causes of pollution generated at construction sites.

May
May was a busy month, with work getting underway on a series of improvements to Swalecliffe Water Treatment Works in Kent.

We were also commissioned by the RNLI to demolish a redundant lifeboat station at Selsey on the West Sussex coast.

Elsewhere, working on behalf of SES Water, we completed a 12-week project to ensure the river intake at Goat Bridge Treatment Works in Surrey is fish and eel friendly.

Working on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council, we also completed an eight-week project to create new moorings on the River Medina.

Finally, Mackley and the other partners involved in delivery of the British Airways i360 project celebrated their first (but certainly not last) success of 2017 – picking up no fewer than three awards, including the headline accolade, at the 2017 RICS South East Awards ceremony.

June
In June, work to demolish the redundant lifeboat station at Selsey on the West Sussex coast moved into the marine phase following the arrival of a jack-up barge.

At the Clay’s Lake Flood Prevention Scheme, work was back underway following a seasonal break in on-site activities.

Working in partnership with frog environmental, we also successfully deployed ‘silt wattles’ to help control sediment at Clay’s Lake.

Elsewhere, the British Airways i360 was named the Best Public Service Building at the LABC South East Building Excellence Awards 2017.

July
Working as part of Team Van Oord and on behalf of the Environment Agency, Mackley completed a project to improve safety and access to two rivers in Surrey. The works involved the placement of a series of safety booms, a debris boom and access ramps on the Rivers Mole and Ember at East Molesey.

We also completed a project at Christ’s Hospital School – a leading independent school in West Sussex – which involved a mix of remedial and landscaping works.

We also published the first two parts of a series of articles looking at specific elements of efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of our work on the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Flood Defence Scheme.

On 6 July, we hosted our 16th Annual Charity Golf Day, raising more than £1,000 for the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance and McMillan Horizon Centre.

August
In August, we successfully completed the programme of major refurbishment works at East Farleigh Lock on the River Medway.

Works got underway to enhance the Knighton Water Treatment Works on the Isle of Wight, a project which improved water supply resilience on the island.

Elsewhere, the British Airways i360 project team tasted success once again, after the landmark scheme picked up the Innovation Award at the 2017 ICE South East Awards ceremony.

September
On 7 September, the Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme was the focus of BBC Breakfast feature which included an interview with the Environment Agency’s Director of Strategy and Investment. Speaking to BBC Weather’s Matt Taylor, as part of a series of features on coastal Britain, Alison Baptiste described the scheme as a ‘fantastic example’ of a flood defence scheme.

The Environment Agency also praised the recently completed £3.6m refurbishment of East Farleigh Lock on the River Medway, describing it as ‘a great asset to visitors, river users, and wildlife for many years to come’.

And good progress continued at the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme, with work taking place at seven of the 10 reaches.

October
We were on hand to assist the Environment Agency with the construction of temporary flood barriers on the Isle of Wight on 21 October, as part of preparations for Storm Brian.

We also commenced a programme of beach replenishment works on Hayling Island in Hampshire, as part of a wider scheme to protect the area from flooding.

The British Airways i360 project team celebrated its sixth industry award of the year, with the landmark scheme picking up the Judges’ Special Award at the 2017 British Construction Industry (BCI) Awards.

We published a timelapse video showcasing the RNLI Selsey demolition project carried out earlier this year, which has since gone on to receive nearly 2k views on YouTube.

Elsewhere, the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme project team ‘wore it pink’ on 20 October to help ensure a brighter future for women affected by breast cancer.

November
November was a month to remember for the British Airways i360 – picking up three more industry awards to take the total to nine in 2017.

On 2 November the scheme won the Design through Innovation Award at the RICS Awards Grand Final, while on 17 November it received the award for Tall or Slender Structures at the 2017 Structural Awards, before going on the be selected as winner of the night’s main accolade – the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence.

December
Finally, December saw the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls project team pick up its first accolade, a commendation in the 2017 RTPI South East Awards for Planning Excellence.

The Environment Agency’s Director of Strategy and Investment praised the Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme during an interview on BBC Breakfast yesterday morning.

Speaking to BBC Weather’s Matt Taylor, as part of a series of features on coastal Britain, Alison Baptiste described the scheme as a ‘fantastic example’ of a flood defence scheme.

In the wide-ranging interview, Ms Baptiste also explained how the scheme has provided a ‘huge boost’ for the economy.

Completed in November 2013, the multi-award winning Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme, at Selsey in West Sussex, was carried out by Mackley as part of Team Van Oord and includes the largest realignment of open coast in the UK.

‘Managed realignment’ involves building new defences inland from the coast and allowing a new intertidal area to form seaward of the new defences. ‘Intertidal’ refers to the land that is exposed at low tide and covered by the sea at high tide.

The scheme, carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency, remains a key element in a 15-year project to provide 7km of new sea defences to protect local communities in West Sussex, while at the same time creating a large nature reserve.

Medmerry, which is located between Selsey and Bracklesham in West Sussex, is one of the stretches of coastline most at risk of flooding in southern England.

In the BBC Breakfast interview, Alison Baptiste said:

“As an engineer, I love Medmerry. It is a fantastic example of where we can reduce flood risk to over 300 properties and we have done that by letting the sea come through the original beach.

“We have put an earth embankment right around the back, and we are using nature’s own resources to slow down the energy of the waves, with the saltmarsh. We have that embankment at the back and it is a much lower embankment than we needed before.

“As a bonus, we have this beautiful 250 hectares of habitat, biodiversity that the RSPB is managing for us. It is a fantastic place for recreation, people here with their dogs and walking – and it has been a huge boost for the local economy and the caravan sites here.”

Talking about coastal flooding in general, Ms Baptiste added:

“The coast is a dynamic thing, and we are seeing sea level rise so what the EA is doing with local councils is planning about how we can best manage the coast.

“And in places where there are communities, we look to protect those communities and in places like here at Medmerry where we can allow some space for the sea to come in, we work with nature to do this managed realignment.

“It is a real challenge as the seas are rising and we have some decisions to make but the EA works really closely with local councils to make the best decisions for each community – and that can often be different ways of doing it.”

Work to demolish a now redundant lifeboat station on the West Sussex coast has moved into the marine phase following the arrival of a jack-up barge.

Working on behalf of the RNLI, Mackley commenced the demolition last month following the completion of a new lifeboat station in Selsey – rendering the existing building surplus to RNLI requirements.

The jack-up barge, along with a smaller ‘muck-away’ barge and a tug, arrived on site at Selsey on Saturday (17 June) having been towed from Southampton.

The barges will be stationed at the site for around a month while the demolition takes place. Once the job is complete, the jack-up barge will be towed back to Southampton for unloading.

Barry Holt, Mackley’s Project Manager for the scheme, said:

“Works are going to plan and we are scheduled to be complete by mid-July, depending on the weather.

“To date we have removed a number of stub and box piles, cleared asbestos from the site, removed scaffolding and isolated the electric supply.

“We are also required to clear the seabed of debris and a team of divers is tagging items on the sea-bed in preparation for their removal.

“A cast iron plaque which will serve as a memento of the old station has been removed and in due course will be put on show in the new lifeboat station.”

Access has to be maintained at all times for the RNLI, and along the promenade for the general public. The Mackley project team will also liaise with local fishermen to allow them to operate throughout the works, and with local diving schools to prevent unauthorised diving in the work zone.

This is not the first project Mackley has carried out at the coastal village of Selsey.

An earlier project at Selsey West Beach extended the residual life of 1.25 km of existing defences. The project involved the placement of approximately 37,000m3 of shingle along the frontage, and repairs to existing timber groynes and the reinforced concrete seawall.

The multi-award winning Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme, completed at Selsey in November 2013, included the largest realignment of open coast in the UK.

The Medmerry scheme, carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency, is a key element in a 15-year project to provide 7km of new sea defences to protect local communities in West Sussex, while at the same time creating a large nature reserve.

Mackley has been commissioned by the RNLI to carry out the demolition of a now redundant lifeboat station at Selsey on the West Sussex coast.

The former lifeboat station is now surplus to requirements following completion of a new lifeboat station, and Mackley has been tasked with demolition and removal of the old station, and the jetty from which it is accessed.

Selsey lifeboat volunteers have been saving lives at sea since 1861 and crews have received 10 awards for gallantry. The new station will house a Shannon class lifeboat, which will replace the Tyne class lifeboat that was previously based at Selsey.

The works, which involve the use of a jack-up barge, are scheduled to take three months and be completed by mid-July, depending on the weather.

The jack-up barge will arrive in Southampton and then be tugged to Selsey where it will be stationed for around one month while the demolition takes place. Once the demolition is complete, it will be toed back to Southampton for unloading.

The works also include removal of asbestos from the lifeboat station, and clearing the seabed following the removal of the demolished station.
